Keep it Honest

 

An open, candid relationship between partners, including honesty about potential and actual roadblocks, will help navigate the challenges that operational realities impose. Each partner must understand these realities, as well as the intricacies of each organization’s respective culture and management structure. Differences in institutional operations are also factors in partnerships between researchers and practitioners. Partners must be aware of the time required to work through each organization’s financial and other approval processes and account for them in the project’s timeline as necessary. Transparency about institutional structures, cultures, and timelines at the beginning of the project, as well as barriers and challenges that arise along the way, will allow partners to plan accordingly.

 

Putting this Lesson into Practice

 

  The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the University of North Carolina Injury Prevention Research Center reported that an honest, trusting relationship has contributed to the success of their joint effort, InjuryFree NC Academy. Both organizations have found that their ability to speak freely with one another has resulted in a shared governance model, one in which both parties are invested in the outcome of the project, and therefore are willing to invest time and resources to ensure its success. Read more...
