Safe States will take a lead role in advocating to:

Safe States will coordinate and collaborate with partners to:

  • Maintain funding at $100M for the Preventive Health and Health Services (PHHS) Block Grant and fund the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Block Grant at $700M. These programs provide support for state and local health department injury and violence prevention efforts given the current lack of a national injury and violence prevention funding program.
  • Restore funding for youth violence prevention at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at $19M.
  • Increase funding for the CDC Winnable Battles and the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control’s (NCIPC) focus areas including, but not limited to: motor vehicle-related injuries; violence against children and youth; prescription drug overdose and traumatic brain injury.
  • Support reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Bill including a focus and funding for public health and equity in transportation.
  • Support reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, including reauthorization of the Rape Prevention and Education program which provides specific funding for the primary prevention of violence against women through state health departments.
  • Support reauthorization of the Traumatic Brain Injury Act, including resources for CDC for the surveillance and educational efforts related to preventing, recognizing, and responding to TBI, and for HRSA for services and support to individuals and families with TBIs.

Safe States will monitor and support efforts to pass federal legislation on specific injury and violence prevention topics as well as maintain and/or increase funding for public health and injury and violence prevention capacity (i.e., National Center for Health Statistics, National Violent Death Reporting System, Safe Routes to School, Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act Suicide Prevention Program, etc).
