Injury and Violence Prevention Workforce Development Strategic Plan

Goals & Strategies for FY 2015 - 2019

The purpose of the strategic plan is to help identify and set priorities for the development of the injury and violence prevention (IVP) field and its workforce. A trained, high‐caliber workforce is a key element of IVP, contributing to the success of research, prevention interventions, and the overall strength and longevity of IVP programs. IVP workforce development is necessary to enlarge the pool of skilled and competent staff, build capacity for IVP, and draw talented professionals to the field of IVP.

This strategic plan is designed to be a useful and relevant tool for the many organizations and agencies, professionals and researchers, and all who are interested in strengthening the diverse IVP field and its workforce. The plan can:

  • provide a common foundation and direction for IVP workforce development efforts;
  • help multiple organizations and agencies work towards a coordinated IVP workforce development plan; and
  • serve as a template for organizations and agencies to develop their own IVP Workforce Development Strategic Plans and Implementation Plans to further translate the plan into actionable activities.

The strategic plan is a joint effort between the Safe States Alliance and the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR).

The strategic plan also reflects input from many diverse IVP prevention partner organizations and agencies. This input was gathered through:

  • an Injury and Violence Prevention Workforce Development Survey, conducted in August and September 2014 to identify key IVP workforce development challenges and needs, and
  • an “open comment” period in November and December 2014 that sought feedback on a draft version of the strategic plan.
