Suicide and Falls Are Now Leading Categories of TBI-related Death

A new study in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) found that suicide and falls surpassed motor vehicle crashes as leading categories of TBI-related deaths. The article, Traumatic Brain Injury-Related Deaths by Race/Ethnicity, Sex, Intent, and Mechanism of Injury—United States, 2000–2017, reports decreases in motor vehicle crash-related TBI deaths and increases in TBI deaths from suicide and falls contributed to this shift.

Key findings include:

  • The majority of TBI-related deaths are due to unintentional injuries.
  • Males and American Indians/Alaska Natives experienced the highest rates of TBI-related death.

Evidence-based prevention strategies exist to reduce the most common ways people suffer a TBI. More can be done to expand these strategies to prevent TBIs and save lives
