The National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS) is a nationwide survey sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard to understand how many people go boating, what types of boats they use, and how often they are on the water. As part of the survey, we are asking for volunteers to complete a brief sign-up page asking about their boating habits and share their contact information with the Coast Guard so a wide range of boaters can be invited to participate in the larger NRBSS survey later in the year.

Q: What is the survey about?

A: The National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS) is a nationwide survey sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard. It has been conducted since 1973 to understand how many people go boating, what types of boats they use, and how often they are on the water. Through this short sign-up page we are collecting boating habits and contact information from boaters. Throughout the year, some boaters who volunteer their information through this page will then be invited to take part in the larger national survey (NRBSS).

Q: Why is the NRBSS important?

A: The information collected through the NRBSS helps support national, state, and local boating safety and law enforcement programs. The water-related chapter is around two hours long but can be paused and resumed at any time. Speakers include investigator in the Special Victim’s Unit of Colorado Amber Urban and aquatic death investigator Andrea Zafares.

Indigenous Populations and Injury Prevention

Indigenous populations experience health disparities, with higher rates of illness, injury and lower life expectancy due to disadvantages and injustices. Urgent action requires further research into injury risk, prevention, management considering unique cultural factors.  

This Topic Collection seeks contributions to progress injury prevention among indigenous communities around the world.

Research that provides insight into the following areas of interest is encouraged: 

• Implementation of injury prevention within the social and cultural contexts existing within indigenous communities
• The impact of historical and current marginalization and discrimination affects the prevention, identification, and management of injury within indigenous populations 
• Examinations of injury prevention efforts that focus on: implementation science, knowledge translation, and/or community-based participatory research.
• Applications of injury prevention theoretical frameworks that consider behavioural, interpersonal, organizational, cultural, and policy-driven factors within indigenous populations.

Injury Prevention aims to highlight the diversity within the Indigenous populations. This includes, but is not limited to:

Reducing Gun Violence in America: Evidence for Change is designed to provide learners with the best available science and insights from top scholars across the country as well as the skills to understand which interventions are the most effective to offer a path forward for reducing gun violence in our homes, schools, and communities. Through this course, you will learn how to:

1. Appreciate the scope of gun violence and the importance of considering the issue across a variety of contexts.

2. Describe the role of law and policy in addressing gun violence at the federal, state, and local levels.

3. Compare the effectiveness of gun violence policies and highlight the importance of changing the way we talk about gun violence.

4. Describe state standards for civilian gun carrying and use and how those standards affect crime and violence.

5. Describe how firearm design is regulated, the effective and just enforcement of firearm laws, and strategies for reducing police-involved shootings.

6. Identify and explain evidence-based programs to reduce gun violence and understand public opinion on gun policy.

For injury and violence prevention advocates, it can be challenging to choose the most effective ways to keep children and adolescents safe from harm. NWCPHP’s newest online course, Safe at Every Stage: Injury and Violence Prevention and the Developing Brain, helps advocates combine neuroscience research, basic data use skills, and collaboration strategies to guide prevention efforts for different ages in their regions.

As young people grow up, their injury risks change with each stage of brain development, from infancy through early adulthood. So do the factors that help keep them safe and resilient. With so much at stake, and finite resources available, public health professionals can use research about injury risk and brain development to help them understand data and set priorities for action.

This three-part course is available at no cost and is intended for public health and health care professionals, safety advocates, and public health students. Visit Safe at Every Stage: Injury and Violence Prevention and the Developing Brain to start learning today.

One-day workshops, presented at no cost to the state, will bring a team of nationally recognized experts to deliver a workshop to State DOT staff from around the state and other stakeholders, such as representatives from headquarters, consultants, MPOs, local governments, advocacy groups, transit agencies, and other partners to further the agency’s implementation of practical design and meet the needs of all roadway users in a variety of contexts.

Content to be covered
Through this workshop, GICD will facilitate a discussion on best practices in the field related to: (1) better project delivery to meet community outcomes and be cost-effective; and (2) help the participating District staff and stakeholders identify barriers and gaps in current practices that are preventing the implementation of Practical Solutions.

Potential topics
Workshops are meant to address a challenge agencies are currently facing, and the GICD team will work with staff to ensure the content meets specific needs. Topics may include:

• Identifying, meeting, and balancing the needs of all roadway users in a variety of contexts.
• Integrating transportation and land use decision-making.
• Clarification of policies, processes, programs, and methodologies related to design guidance.
• Project scoping procedures.
• Organizational culture to implement practical design.
• Examples of other transportation agencies successfully implementing practical design.

Products
A set of recommendations will be presented to the audience for further discussion and reaction. Following each workshop, GICD will develop a short Recommendations Memorandum summarizing the barriers identified by participants and outlining the consensus on recommendations for updating existing practices and documents to address those barriers.

Additional support
With additional resources, GICD may provide further, in-depth assistance to states. State or philanthropic sources may support a second workshop day that is more tailored to the needs of the DOT, among other options.

RTZ is comprised of three interconnected paths:

1. Coalition – The coalition is made up of over 200 unique organizations who want to play a role in being part of the solution from academia, trade associations, advocacy groups, law enforcement, EMS, private industry, survivor advocates, governmental agencies and beyond who will work together (all rowing in the same direction) finding solutions to reach ZERO traffic fatalities. RTZ Coalition holds quarterly meetings in DC which you are invited to attend and meetings are also webcast.
2. Grants - NSC, as the leader of the Coalition, will administer a $1 million per year (for 3 years) for Safe System Innovation Grants funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Seven inaugural winners were announced early this week with grants awarded to organizations committed to roadway safety programs. NSC will also contribute $1 million in funding over the next three years to support the coalition and administer the grant program.
3. Report - Developing a future planning scenario for 2050 with Rand Corporation on how human-vehicle-roadway systems could be designed to get to zero deaths by 2050. The outcome will be a report outlining the steps needed to reach ZERO deaths.

RTZ success means moving beyond the business-as-usual approach which will require meaningful collaboration across disciplines and traditional boundaries; a strong sense of urgency and accountability; and stepped-up action, including the willingness to consider new, innovative and pioneering approaches to stop the upward trend of those dying on our roadways.

Principles & Practice of Injury Prevention is an intensive, competency-based course designed to enhance participants' knowledge and skills in injury and violence prevention. A problem-solving paradigm is used to introduce the principles and practice of injury prevention. The 3.5-day course includes:

• Lectures and discussions that cover core competencies in the field, led by Center faculty and other experts, and
• Small group exercises that enable participants to use what they are learning in lecture through hands-on practical application.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Public health and safety practitioners, health care professionals, students interested in injury and violence prevention, epidemiologists, first responders, trauma professionals, nurses, physicians, health department personnel, transportation safety planners, health and safety educators, fire and injury prevention professionals.

This course can be taken for academic credit (3 credits) or not for academic credit.
